How IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Works? - Lumilia Skin Co.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive form of light therapy used for various dermatological procedures including long-term/ permanent hair removal. The device emits a broad spectrum of light which is absorbed by the pigment melanin located in the hair follicle. When the pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the IPL light, the light energy is converted into heat, resulting in thermal damage to the hair follicle. This results in delayed regrowth of the hair or permanent destruction of the hair follicle. Treated hairs naturally fall out over the course of a few weeks.
Intense Pulsed Light is a technology that has been in use since 1996 for hair removal. Since then, no serious side effects or damage from long-term use have been reported. The Lumilia Lux has been developed in conjunction with leading dermatologists and tested with thousands of women worldwide. The Lumilia Lux fulfils all international safety regulations for home-use appliances.
The Lumilia Lux™ is built with advanced features that other devices won’t have: • LED Display Screen to visibly view the device settings • Latest clinical grade technology • Skin Rejuvenation Setting, which improves collagen production, skin tone & texture, acne scars, skin redness, spider veins, hyperpigmentation, etc. • 3.5cm large treatment window • Maximum energy output of 15j for stronger and more effective treatments • Wavelength spectrum of 550-1200nm which ensures entire hair follicle is treated • Built in Integrated Safety Sensor to prevent unintentional flashing • Glide and Auto Flash Mode for treating large areas fast • 8 Adjustable Light Settings to suite different skin tones
You can use your Lumilia Lux™ on your entire body, including your Brazilian and face (just be sure to not get too close to your eyes).
The Lumilia Lux is equipped with a high-performance quartz lamp, which does not require replacement. Based on average usage for one user, you can continuously maintain results for many years to come. In the unfortunate event that your lamp does not work, please contact us for further assistance.
The Lumilia Lux is safe and gentle enough to treat the entire bikini area: the bikini line, mons pubis, labia majora, perineum. So if you want a Brazilian or a Hollywood, go right ahead! To prevent discomfort, we advise you to treat the inner thighs and buttocks with a lower setting, as this skin can be more pigmented so might be more sensitive. IPL is not suitable for the 'inner parts', therefore you should never use the Lumilia Lux on the labia minora, or anus.
Yes, you should shave the desired areas before using your handset. A close to skin shave is best recommended. The goal is for the light energy to reach the hair follicle as quickly as possible, so shaving beforehand is essential to achieve the best results. The hair follicle does need to be in tact for IPL to be effective. This means no waxing, plucking, threading, epilating etc.
Between treatments you should only shave when required. You should never wax, pluck, or epilate as these hair removal methods removes the entire root, which is what absorbs the light during the treatment.
No. This product is a once-off purchase. There is absolutely no need for replacements or refills.
IPL is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones. This is because the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin rather than the melanin in the hair. Refer to the skin tone chart on the How To Use page to see whether or not IPL is suitable for you.
Our upgraded handsets have over 800,000 flashes, which will last well over 20 years if used as directed. The device comes with a 1-year warranty and a 90-day money-back guarantee.
The Lumilia Lux™ also includes a unique Skin Rejuvenation Setting at the Level 1 Light Intensity which can be used weekly. The device releases a pulse of filtered light that stimulate the fibroblast cells within the skin that produce collagen and elastin. By stimulating collagen production, this results in an improved and more youthful skin tone and texture. It is effective in controlling fine lines, acne and sun damage.
Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on pregnant or breastfeeding women, we still don’t recommend using our handset as a safety precaution.
You should not IPL over very dark freckles or moles, however light freckles are fine.
As IPL works with your natural skin tone, adding artificial tan creates a layer over your skin which doesn’t allow the device to penetrate as effectively. For a successful treatment please wait 2 weeks after sun tanning to use your Handset and please also wait at least 48 hours to tan after using your handset. Artificial tan should also not be present on your skin whilst using your handset but can be applied after.
You should not IPL over tattoos. The light energy will be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair which can cause a reaction in the skin and blister. You should always go around your tattoos.
Yes, this is completely normal. As the light energy is heating the hair, you may smell a slight burning but this just means there may be some hairs that have not been shaved. Please ensure that you have prepped the skin correctly, and that the skin is completely shaved before starting your session.
The Lumilia Handset comes with a 12-month warranty so if your device stops flashing, we will replace the device for you free of charge. Please visit our Shipping and returns page for terms and conditions.
Don’t worry. Your Lumilia Lux is not defective and what you see inside your Xenon lamp/bulb glass is not an air bubble. You can find this in every Lumilia Lux, due to the process used to produce the flash lamp.
Use your Lumilia Handset every 2-3 days, for your first 4-5 treatments. Once the 4 to 5 treatments are completed, we recommend touch ups every 2nd week. IPL is not a 100% permanent, so you may reach the stage where very minimal hairs grow back. Skin Rejuvenation can be used 3 times per week.
